Learning to Navigate Conflict & Emotions

The Workshop

Transform your work by transforming your conflicts.

Learn the language of conflict and emotions so you can turn them from obstacles into opportunities for growth.

Conflict is inevitable.
So embrace the heat.

Many, if not most of us, fear both conflict and emotions. Why? Because more often than not, we do not understand them. We have not learned their language. But the truth is:

  1. Conflict and emotions are inevitable and invaluable.

  2. We can transform our apprehension of them by learning to speak their languages.

Conflict is like heat; it can destroy and harm, or it can create and help. Just as we must learn how to tend to heat in order to benefit from it, so we must learn how to tend to conflict.

Does any of this sound familiar?

  • You are all drained by conflict you don’t feel equipped to resolve and believe the lie that resolution is not possible. The work feels corporate, rigid, and impersonal and you might assume it’s too late to make changes.

  • Leaders are committed and motivated by the mission, but unable to excite their team and/or audience. You are feeling lost as you try to solve this problem unsuccessfully.

  • Cultures are shaped by our practices, stories, and ways of relating. One powerful way to shift culture is to transform the way your organization addresses conflict, communication, and power.

  • It is impossible to work with other people and not have conflict eventually. It’s a natural part of all life on the planet. And yet, few organizations invest in building skills around dealing well with conflict. This workshop is the way to change that.

Change the way you deal with conflict,
and you’ll change the way conflict deals with you.

What is the workshop?

It’s an insightful, engaging, interactive learning experience for your team to learn the language of conflict and emotions in order to navigate both with skill and confidence.

In just a half day (live or virtually), your team will learn
basic skills of conflict resolution,
engage masters-level frameworks for analyzing conflict,
develop new mindsets to see the gifts that conflict and emotions bring,
and leave with essential tools for self-reflection and growth.

And they will leave with a suite of hands-on resources they can use immediately to engage the working relationships with more skill and wisdom.
(See the bottom of this page for more on those resources!)

What will happen during the workshop?

  • Learn your conflict style.

No one has only one way of dealing with conflict, but we all have defaults. Take a conflict style assessment and gain deeper insight into your instinctive method for engaging (or running from) conflict.

  • Develop new essential tools.

Explore key conflict analysis frameworks like the PIN diagram, Pillars Model, and Conflict Map. Learn how to use each on the Map My Conflict Canvas to explore a different aspect of conflict.

  • Apply, practice, integrate.

We will take the models and frameworks we’ve learned and start applying them right away! Starting with a case study, you’ll then examine a conflict from your own experience, looking now through the lenses you’ve just learned. Then we will practice—deep listening and nonviolent communication are top of the list.

You’ll receive an exclusive suite of resources to accelerate your learning.

One of the most celebrated parts of Navigating Conflict & Emotions is the innovative Participant Kit. Your team will receive the suite of one-of-a-kind resources that will enhance their learning and then keep the work alive, long after the workshop.

Your team will get:

  • A durable, beautifully boxed Participant Kit

  • Michael McRay’s award-winning book I Am Not Your Enemy: Stories to Transform a Divided World

  • A large Map My Conflict canvas that can be used to analyze your conflicts over and over again

  • Transforming Conflict: A (Way Too) Basic Guide, a short, accessible booklet featuring Michael’s ten essential practices for transforming conflict

  • The Language of Emotions card pack from emotions expert Karla McLaren
